The nucleus of the province’s publishing industry is comprised of 26 member publishers of the ABPBC. These publishers make corporate financial investments into the cultural output they produce and share profit from that creative content from commercial sales. More broadly in the province, there are an additional 20 businesses that include self-publishers, hybrid publishers and chapbook presses. These bring B.C.’s total publishing business count to 48. Books at Upstart + Crow
Founded in 1974, the Association of Book Publishers of BC (ABPBC) plays a critical role in supporting the long-term health and success of Canadian-owned book industries. As an association of BC-owned and controlled book publishing companies, ABPBC provides information on the publishing industry, produces 500 new Canadian-authored titles each year in all genres, supports its members’ publishing programs, aspirations, activities, and engages in book-related communities and the continuing awareness of the value of books.
As the voice of the B.C.’s publishing industry, ABPBC has 12 key purposes for this sector of B.C.’s creative industry — from encouraging the writing, publishing, distribution and promotion of books written by British Columbians and Canadian authors to fostering the business and business interests of its members.
The Province declares Monday, April 12, 2021 as the seventh annual BC Book Day. BC Book Day invites British Columbians to celebrate the province’s book & magazine publishers, authors, illustrators, bookstores, libraries, festivals, and literary prizes that connect us with local stories. This year, BC Book Day and Creative Industries Week will be celebrated on social media. Join in online by hashtagging #BCBookDay and #ReadLocalBC. Visit the official BC Book Day page for social media graphics and sample messages.
