Creative BC is proud to support Clay Ravens as part of the BC Music Fund’s Sound Recording Program and recently had the opportunity to catch up with the band!
1) Q: Is there a song on your album that is meaningful to you?
A: The song Draft Dodger was inspired by the number of Americans talking about fleeing to Canada because of the current political situation. The song tells a story that reflects on our personal experiences growing up with Draft Dodgers, and the universal difficulties of dealing with a loss of home, through the eyes of an American Draft Dodger during the Vietnam War.
2) Q: Does your album have a theme?
A: The album in entitled All In which speaks to our efforts to put everything into our music. The songs themselves reflect on associated themes. The song Grown Ass Man speaks to the idea of sticking by your friends through thick and thin; the song All In is about going for everything you believe in regardless of the consequences; the song Railtie speaks about living life to the fullest through difficult circumstances.
3) Q: Is there someone you want to rave about that you worked with on the album?
A: Paul Boechler was so amazing to work with. He is a wizard in the studio and his ability to push us to get the best possible performance while keeping the environment relaxed was fantastic.
4) Q: What is your favourite BC venue or town to play in?
A: The iconic Commodore Ballroom is our favorite BC venue. Clay Ravens have not had a chance to play there yet but we have seen countless shows there and it is on our bucket list.
5) Q: Have you ever written a song inspired by a place in BC?
A: Three of our band members are from Saltspring Island BC and the island has influenced every song we have ever written.
