Screen BC Short Film Award (formerly MPPIA Short Film Award) is an industry initiative of Screen BC, in partnership with Creative BC, Warner Bros. Discovery Access Canada, and the Whistler Film Festival Society. This award supports an emerging filmmaker to develop their directing career by realizing a unique creative vision in a short film project. The award consists of up to $15K in cash plus in-kind services valued up to $100K from across the industry.

Established in 2007, The Award was founded to recognize and celebrate the contribution of film and television to the Province of British Columbia. The completed project screens at the subsequent Whistler Film Festival. This annual Award is possible with the generous support of British Columbia’s motion picture production community.

To date, 70 BC filmmakers from a field of more than 335 applicants have participated in the Screen BC (formerly MPPIA) pitch competition. 14 compelling pitches have resulted in 14 signature short films successfully produced with more than $200,000 in cash awards and nearly $1.4 million production services and equipment supplied.

The world premiere of easybake, from 2023 Screen BC Short Film Award pitch winner Sasha Duncan, took place on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Maury Young Arts Centre during the Screen BC Pitch event and the Shortwork 4 program.
