To kick off this year’s Creative Industries Week, DigiBC is presenting Creative Technology Day on April 22 to feature the exceptional work done by studios across the province in the video games, animation, visual effects (VFX), virtual/augmented/extended reality (VR/AR/XR), and virtual production services.
Beyond showcasing these achievements, DigiBC will also be highlighting some of the key programs and initiatives that have been developed with industry partners, educators, and the provincial government to ensure that B.C. continues to cultivate and maintain world-class talent while enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion across the sector.
About B.C.’s Interactive Companies
British Columbia’s interactive and digital media industry is one of the most dynamic engines in the B.C. economy and is a key driver of skilled jobs that will define the future of the province.
The core B.C.’s green, knowledge economy-based interactive and digital media industry is represented from world leaders in e-sports to emerging regional entrepreneurs and employers. There were 39% more video game companies in 2021 versus 2019 outpacing growth in Quebec and Ontario during the same period. Beyond this, B.C.’s virtual and augmented reality ecosystem is the second-largest VR/AR ecosystem in the world.
B.C.’s digital media industry garnered numerous nominations and awards this year. Honourable mentions include Framestore winning three categories at the Visual Effects Society Awards for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, WildBrain Studios winning the Outstanding Animation Series at the NAAP Image Awards with Disney Channel’s ‘The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder S2’, and Sony Pictures Imageworks’ SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE taking home seven Annie awards.
