Brace yourselves for the highly anticipated premiere of AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER coming soon to Netflix! This live-action adaptation of the award-winning animated series is an eight-episode series that was filmed in Vancouver and Burnaby. The production took place on a soundstage so remarkable that it recently earned the distinguished honour of being recognized as a Guinness Book of World Records holder.
Situated at the Canadian Motion Picture Park in South Burnaby, the LED sound stage that AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER was filmed on is a collaborative venture between the visual effects company Pixomondo and the Canadian film equipment rental firm William F. White International. Spanning an impressive 22,000 sq ft with dimensions of 80 ft by 27.5 ft, the facility boasts 2,500 LED wall panels and 760 LED ceiling panels, forming an almost fully enclosed circle providing 310 degrees of LED screens. This impressive soundstage was recently declared world’s largest LED video wall film production studio by the Guinness Book of World Records!
This cutting-edge technology facilitates virtual production, enabling filmmakers to seamlessly blend live-action sequences with digitally created environments in real-time on the LED walls and ceilings. The result is a production experience that revolutionizes traditional filmmaking. The widespread adoption of these LED screens not only transforms on-set backgrounds but also significantly reduces production costs, enhances efficiency, expedites the shooting process, and offers realistic, adjustable lighting.
In contrast to traditional green screens, the dynamic LED screens provide a versatile and interactive backdrop during filming, eliminating the need for extensive post-production work. Moreover, the system’s live background aids actors in immersing themselves in their roles, a unique advantage not easily achieved with static green screens. This innovative technology has gained widespread recognition, notably seen in its application on Disney+’s THE MANDALORIAN, utilizing Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic’s StageCraft LED virtual production system.
AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER is set in an Asiatic realm ravaged by war, where individuals possess the unique ability to “bend” one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire, or air. Aang, the legendary “Avatar,” stands as the sole being with the power to bend all elements, destined to restore harmony to a world in turmoil, particularly from the oppressive Fire Nation. Accompanied by newfound allies Katara and Sokka, Aang embarks on a journey to master the elements, all while being relentlessly pursued by Zuko, the exiled prince of the Fire Nation, determined to reclaim his honor by capturing the elusive Avatar.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the much-anticipated debut of AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER scheduled to hit Netflix on February 22, 2024. It’s a date you won’t want to miss!
