Word Vancouver returns for its 30+ year tradition of celebrating stories, community, and the joy of the written word. As Western Canada’s largest free literary festival, the event brings together authors, publishers, readers, and culture enthusiasts for a week of conversation, discovery, and creativity.
Running September 14 to September 20, 2025, this year’s festival features nearly 40 events spread across multiple venues in Vancouver. The main celebration will take place on Saturday, September 20 at UBC Robson Square, where visitors can spend the day exploring exhibitor tables, attending workshops, listening to readings, and enjoying the lively festival atmosphere.
“From exhibitors who connect with authors about a potential book deal, to readers discovering a writing program, or simply meeting a favourite B.C. author, watching this community expand and grow is the most exciting part of the festival. We’re inviting everyone to come and be part of Word Vancouver’s story.” – Bonnie Nish, Word Vancouver Executive Director
Taking inspiration from the diversity of Canadian authors, the events presented by Word Vancouver embrace the vibrancy of stories and experiences for all people. Highlights this year include:
- A panel on the influence of birds in literature with Cecily Nicholson, Elaine Avila, and Melissa Hafting.
- A practical workshop, Pitch Perfect, where editors Shashi Bhat, Michelle Cyca, and Stephen Smysnuik share insider tips on how to pitch and submit work.
- A guest curators room with Kayla MacInnis, Guest Indigenous Curator and Candie Tanaka, Guest LGBTQIA2S+ Curator.
- Spaces like the Children’s Tent, a live podcast recordings, and even a dedicated Silent Writing Room for those who want to reflect and write in peace.
Since its beginnings as “Word On The Street Vancouver” in 1995, the festival has grown steadily, evolving into a cornerstone of B.C.’s literary scene, yet its mission remains: to foster creativity, encourage conversation, and celebrate the written word in all its forms. With its mix of readings, panels, workshops, and community spirit, Word Vancouver is a reminder of how stories bring us together.
