Celebrate the triumph of SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE, as it swings into the limelight with well-deserved recognition from the Critic’s Choice Awards! In this year’s upcoming awards that will be presented on January 14, 2024, SPIDER MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE has been nominated for three awards – Best Animated Feature, Best Visual Effects, and Best Score. This groundbreaking film, with many ties to B.C., has captivated audiences with its stunning visuals, compelling storytelling, and a fresh take on the beloved Spider-Man universe.
SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is an animated superhero film created by Sony Pictures Imageworks, a visual effects and computer animation studio headquartered in Vancouver, and based on the Marvel Comics characters of the same name. Serving as a sequel to SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, it marks the second film in the Spider-Verse saga that continues the epic narrative of the multiverse-wielding Spider-Man.
The Spider Man series follow Miles Morales, Brooklyn’s Spider-Man, as he embarks on a multiverse journey, joining forces with a team of Spider-People tasked with preserving its existence. However, as they clash over handling a new threat, Miles faces a dilemma and must redefine heroism to save his loved ones. The animation features the returning voices of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacey, and Jake Johnson as Peter B Parker.
Not only was SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE produced in Vancouver, but it also boasts interesting ties to a unique software and a talented Vancouver Island teenager. Kiegan Simard, an 18-year-old from Saanich, crafted MecaFace, a software add-on facilitating the animation of Lego faces’ eyes and mouths. Kiegan, deeply engaged in the animation community, spearheads a Discord server aiding over 2,000 animators, including mentoring Preston Mutanga from Ontario. Preston utilized MecaFace to create a Lego version of the movie’s trailer, garnering thousands of online views and catching the attention of the film’s animators, who enlisted Preston to contribute a Lego scene to the movie.
ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE weaves a complex tapestry of Spider-Man and spider-themed heroes, connecting to other movies and shows in the Spider-Man universe. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a few cameos, including Donald Glover as Live-Action Prowler, Andy Samberg as Scarlet Spider/Ben Reilly, and Yuri Lowenthal’s Spider-Man from the video game series. This film intricately intertwines every iteration of Spider-Man into one massive multiverse web, expanding beyond previous live-action connections, notably bridging the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield movies, as well as Tom Hardy’s “Venom” spinoffs.
Make sure to catch the Critic’s Choice Awards on January 14, 2024 on the CW to discover if your friendly neighbourhood hero swings to victory!
