Each August, more than 100,000 people gather in Vancouver to celebrate the city’s annual Pride Parade. Vancouver was the first Canadian city to host a Pride parade, with an unofficial march taking place as early as 1978; the event gained official recognition from the municipality in 1981. In the decades since, the parade and its surrounding festivities have grown into the large-scale celebration Vancouver is known for today.
In the spirit of Pride, the city and province host a wide range of vibrant events timed to coincide with the parade each year. These celebrations do more than mark the accomplishments and rights of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community — they also serve as a platform for awareness, solidarity, and acceptance.
