B.C. Filmmaker Derek Kwan Takes Top Prize at CBC’s National Short Film Faceoff

CBC’s Short Film Faceoff is returning for its 17th season, and B.C. filmmaker Derek Kwan, who wrote and directed 100 DAYS, went head-to-head with some of Canada’s most talented directors and was announced as the winner.

In addition to the prize of $30,000 from Telefilm Canada to support his upcoming projects, Derek also received a national broadcast opportunity on CBC, and the film is now available on CBC/Radio-Canada.

100 DAYS is set during a newborn’s 100-day celebration at a Chinese restaurant, where tensions boil over when an unexpected guest arrives. This family dramedy was inspired by Derek’s personal experience at a Vietnamese 100-day party, motivating him to showcase this unique cultural setting in film.

Derek’s next project, SPECIAL K, will feature a minor league baseball player billeting in a Chinese family home, portraying cultural differences and breaking stereotypes of Asian families.
